Sonic Art and Soundscapes

Internet Orchestra

tree mirrorThe internet orchestra explores new forms of network music by a process of rehearsal and performance across a range of internet and local networks. Recent investigations have used the Access Grid in various attempts to address the problems of latency and loss.

The project has a long history, stretching back to 1999 when Andrew Hugill created his internet-based Symphony for Cornwall. In 2004, elements of the internet orchestra were included in his project with the Philharmonia Orchestra: The Sound Exchange.

Both these projects are documented in Contemporary Music Review Since the launch of the IOCT, the internet orchestra has worked with Manchester Computing through CSAGE and with the Telematics Circle of the Deep Listening Institute. The project is now directed by Simon Emmerson and includes contributions from John Richards and Aladdin Ayesh.
