BS: Does Techniquest do anything to or [how does]

TS: [Yes yes] I think it does. I think it speaks to the people - who haven't - mainly to the people who haven't got science as, if you like - that as a cultural foundation in their life. And it opens the odd window or two in the same way that - science on television does. They see that there is something there, which is investigative and which is interesting, and amusing, and exciting. Which they perhaps wouldn't have come to before. And I think that a place like Techniquest has - the technical word is a "conative" function. That is that tends to dispose people towards things scientific and I am pretty sure though I don't have research evidence for it that people who come here are perhaps more likely to watch a science program. Or to listen to something scientific or to read something scientific in a magazine, you know or in a newspaper or whatever. Where otherwise they might not have had the inclination.

BS: Is that before they've come to Techniquest or after?

TS: After. I think that a lot them get dragged here, kicking and screaming by their kids. Or they're looking for something to do in - and around Cardiff when it's raining and they can't go down to the beach, I'm pretty cer- well the fact that when it rains this place is full and when the sun shines it isn't, is an indication that we are a place to visit a bit like a museum.
