BS:. . . Do you have between computer interactivity and physical interactivity?

DS: Yeah I - the - I think it's when you go to exhibitions - which are not, don't tend to be other science centres generally but - people who've got, maybe other museums new museums or people who've got design consultancies to do work for them. And, it's so tempting to use a computer to do stuff because you just think oh I could just you could just write a program to do that. Be really easy. So, it's a lot easier to do interactives that involve a computer because computers are - by nature quite interactive and they're quite - easy to program and make them do stuff. But when you're faced with a whole exhibition which is just full of computer interactive after computer interactive, you can just get - a bit of bored with them and you're like "I can't even be bothered what's on that screen" because, you know, it's just another computer. And unless the quality of the interactive is very high, which it usually isn't because, people have taken that route because it's the easy route, so it's kind of the lazy way, to go about it. And - I'm not against the use of computers but - people can - do that over the Internet and I think - they don't need to actually pay to go in a science centre to do that. If you, if you're interested in computer interactions then you might as well set up a web site rather than a science centre. because you can do all that - over the Internet basically.

I think there is a big market for that and - the potential of the web. Some people are taking it on but, when they talk about interactivity in terms of web design they have- they haven't really they're just like skimming the surface. There's so much more you could do with computer interactivity. But we do (steer/stay) away from that because - as I pointed out, if people are coming to a science centre, you wan to give them an experience which is more than just sitting at a computer, because otherwise why bother coming. And the exhibit which we - could have been really easy to do on a a (computer all a computer) has ended up being a really good exhibit is the one which is - Create a Creature? I don't know if you've played with it but it would have been really easy and I've seen it - this - similar, kind of things done with other - other museums is that you just have a screen touch screen. You select the genes on the screen it creates the creature and - you, that's it. That's the whole thing. Which - I mean it's a fun little game but but because we actually made it you have physical chromosome pieces that you have to slot in the right holes and then if they're right they go down. Which, which actually something we've used for several exhibits. It's much more physical it's much more interactive and - it's funny because even the little 2 year olds because that's the kind of puzzle game they know, they like will do it and I think it just yeah that that is more fun than having a touch screen. I don't know whether the touch screen is just getting passé after all.
