BS: Thinking in terms of Techniquest, how would you define your approach to science education or science communication in Techniquest?
AS: How do you mean? My approach personally?
BS: yes, yes.
AS: To science communication and science education. You know part - part of it is that I think science is really exciting and really interesting and I think it's a real shame that - a lot of people - maybe feel that it's not for them because they think it might be too difficult or, excuse me, or - or maybe just boring because you know they, they've maybe did it at school and didn't think that. And you know I'm not, I'm not - what's the word? It's not a sort of religion for me I don't think everyone should do science you know cause it's so brilliant and everyone should - you know get a degree in it and a PhD and God knows what. I really don't feel that at all. But what I do think is it's a shame if people - dismiss it when they haven't had the chance to - you know, I think, the main thing for me is that I think you know in a democracy I think all of us should for - again I'm talking about issues in science. But all of us should be able - should be - encouraged to have a say about things that matter to us. So we should - if you know we should know about stem cell research so that we can say either yeah lets go for it it's really important or actually I think that's really terrible because it's you know, for whatever reason. And I think - if - so I think for me it's all about really just trying to, without being someone who thinks "Oh my God everyone's got to know about science because it's so wonderful" and therefore should go all the way with it. I don't feel that I just think it's a shame if people don't - have - have the opportunity to you know get involved and whatever. Because that's - I mean - just because I'm a scientist it doesn't mean that I'm not interested, in fact I'm really interested in art and history and things like, that you know. In a way it's a sort of cultural thing isn't it, you know it's a shame that people don't - well is it a shame? I don't know.
