Pre-show

Peter on stage in the science theatre. High shot, camera is stage right. Bella talks to Peter. Peter says that he wants to make it "bigger" than it was on the page.

Back screen reads: "pushes and pulls" and features a cartoon of a monkey on a skateboard.

The children from Llanfairfach school enter the science theatre. Jean directs them to their seats. The group leaders stand on the stage and sit down only when all the children are seated. The second school enters.

The sound from Peter's mike comes on. The last school comes in. Peter asks Jean to switch the music on. The tune to "drunken sailor plays. Peter turns off the tape.

Show Starts

Introduction

Peter performs the intro to the show. Jean and Peter mime pushing and pulling. Peter introduces the theme of forces.

Stunt Monkey Sequence

Peter introduces the star of the show - The TQ stunt monkey". Peter invites Oscar on stage. Oscar pulls the monkey. Peter claps for Oscar, and then the audience claps. Another boy comes on stage and pushes the monkey. Applause when he leaves.

(Note that Phil's "woo hoo" falls very flat. Children in general seem very quiet. Phil seems to comment on this.)

Peter talks about pushing and pulling. He says that some pushes can be "unfriendly". Jean pushes and pulls Peter in a mock aggressive way. Peter teaches the audience to gently push and pull each other. The children talk and laugh as they do this.

Monkey and Banana

Peter pushes the monkey towards a banana. The monkey rolls off stage. The children laugh. Peter asks: "What can we do to make sure he stops at his banana"? He sums up: 'we can use pushes to make things move and stop.'

Peter: 'what would happen, if I gave him a gentle push, and the Jean gave him another push in the same direction? Hands up if you think he will slow down, Hands up if you think he will speed up, hands up if you don't know? Not knowing is good it shows that you are a scientist'

Peter asks if anyone thinks it is possible to move the monkey without touching him. Jean , at the back of the stage, picks up the sail. Children in the audience make suggestions until someone comes up with the right answer. Peter explains how the sail works.

Peter attaches the sail to the skateboard. He breathes in several times and then tries to blow the sail. He asks the audience what he needs. He picks up the giant hairdryer and blows it into the audience. He then blows it at the skateboard, which moves. [monkey]

Using forces to change the shape of something

Peter brings some foam and a tray onto the stage. He asks for volunteers or "victims". He asks the children what happening: 'Is it getting bigger? Is it getting smaller?' The children shout: "YES".

Peter: "do you think the shape will change?" Children: 'Yes.' "Do you think that it will get shorter?" Children "No." "Do you think that it will get longer?" Children "Yes." Peter and Jean pull the putty. Peter asks for suggestions for other ways to change shape. Corrie comes up.

Toy Shop

Peter says that he will go to the toy shop. The camera pans to the sign, which reads "toy shop". Peter says that he will divide the toys by: (he lifts up the pull sign. Audience: "pulling", and (he lifts up the push sign) Audience: "pushing." Peter teaches the audience the actions.

Peter brings out the toys from the toy shop one by one: a clown, a croc, a party blower, a John in a box and some magnets. The children in the audience can be seen miming the appropriate actions.

Peter brings out the rocket. Some children shout out when it fires off. Peter asks if he should do it again. The children says yes. The noise level goes up. Peter shouts 5 4 3 2 1. Some one in the audience says: "blast off!" Peter fires the rocket.

Peter plays the "out and about" video. He asks the children to shout out whether it is a push or a pull.

The three little pigs

Peter begins the story of the three little pigs. He asks audience how the wolf could blow the wall down. He tries to blow with his mouth, but can't and so fetches the hairdryer.. Next he knocks down the wall of straw. Finally he tries to knock down the bricks, but fails.

Peter asks what else he could use to knock down the wall. Some of audience: 'ball?' Peter kicks a ball at the wall. Some of audience: 'jackhammer.' Jean is at the back of the stage stroking the monkey. Some from audience: "Rocket!" Peter blows air from the rocket to the audience, so that they can feel the force of air.

Peter says that it is a job for the stunt monkey. Peter: "Good luck stunt monkey it's been nice knowing you." He pauses. " Are you sure?".

The monkey's hat falls down as it goes into the wall. Jean runs to the monkey and strokes its head.

Bakery and end of show

Camera pans to the back screen which reads "bakery". Peter and Jean bring on a table. Peter: 'We are going to push the dough, squash, stretch, pull, twist'. Peter asks for volunteers and chooses five to come down. The audience chant "Push, Push, Push Bing as the volunteers handle the dough. Applause

Peter: "What show would be complete without a sing song?" Peter introduces the song to the children. He reminds them of the actions. He switches on music, Cam pans to screen, which displays words. They all sing the song, and applaud when finished.

Peter introduces the final "experiment". The children, under instruction of Peter can be seen pulling their arms apart and pushing them together. Peter asks them to do this really fast, and applause breaks out. The children file out to the p & p song.
