BS: When you say that you put together a framework, could you give me an
example of what that means?
HW I will refer to my notes here, just drag them out, I mean, we
had been, as with most things, we'd been thinking about electricity for a
long time, just how to do it. And, Darren - in fact when Darren was in college
we had talked about a suite of 6, linked, exhibits which would be known as,
variously as ElectriQuest or Darren's Electrical Suite of Exhibits. And so
I have things like, common vocabulary, common components, visual identities,
links to the real world. Using real components and visitor friendly packaging
and, then, to create from that, subtopics within electricity. So, magnetism,
electricity, and components. And then within magnetism we have poles and fields
and magnets. And then within magnets you have permanent and electro magnets.
So it's a hierarchical structure, which we can look at, which just, distils
into single words the topics within. Electricity you have static electricity
or current electricity. In static electricity you have poles and fields. In
current electricity you have AC and DC. So you've got to look for a, a suite
of exhibits which are appealing, but which cover those things and don't leave
anything important out. So, that's my framework document, and then, one of,
the nearest thing we have to standard form is the, the, for exhibit proposals
we have, a form which covers a number of issues so, we can compile, big long
list of exhibits, exhibit proposals and then look at those in terms of their
balance for, how easy or difficult they are to do, or, or what, how it covers
the topics within electricity.
Now, we don't do that for every topic, but, certainly for this one, because
we've been thinking about it for so long, we did that. Now, public programmes
had been thinking about this, Evette in particular, and Heather as well which
is going to be great to sort out on the tape the difference between Evette
and Heather but I'll try and do my best. Evette had been thinking about the
show elements of it, and wanted to do something on lightning and spectacular
sparks etcetera so we, we started looking for a Tesla coil which is just the
best way to do lots of big sparks. And, it's, quite difficult to kill yourself
with a Tesla coil it's quite easy to kill yourself with current electricity
or a, a Van de Graf at the size we've got you could certainly hurt yourself
quite, nastily with. So, you know, it's choosing things within those topics
to suit people.
